A Tuya camera is an IP camera built on the Tuya IoT platform, which means it pairs with the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app, inherits the platform's device identity and cloud account structure, and can be extended with ONVIF or RTSP for local recording. Xingliao, founded in 2014 in Shenzhen with 110 staff, builds Tuya Wi-Fi cameras for OEM buyers, including indoor, outdoor, PTZ and battery versions.

  • Platform: Tuya Wi-Fi modules on 2.4 GHz, with Tuya Smart and Smart Life app support
  • Range: indoor pan-tilt, outdoor bullet, PTZ, battery and solar-assisted models
  • Local access: ONVIF and RTSP for NVRs alongside the app
  • Branding: standard Tuya app, or your own app panel under a private product ID
  • MOQ: 500 pcs per colour for standard models, 1,000 pcs for your own product ID
  • Programme timing: 7 to 15 days for samples, 25 to 40 days for new tooling
  • Compliance: CE, FCC, RoHS, UKCA, CCC and PSE documentation
  • Customisation ladder: samples from 5 pcs (charged, credited against your first bulk order); logo as sticker or silk print from 10 pcs per model; laser-engraved logo from 300 pcs; custom packaging 500–1,000 pcs; your own product ID (private PID – app panel, firmware identity, cloud listing) from 1,000 pcs; new tooling and ODM design 2,000–3,000 pcs

Putting "Tuya" on a camera is not a feature decision, it is an infrastructure decision. It determines which app your customer downloads, whose cloud holds the device record, how firmware updates reach the field, and how much of the product you actually own. Buyers who understand this before quoting get a shorter path to market and a product they can support. Buyers who treat it as a checkbox usually discover the trade-offs when they ask for their own brand on the app.

XingLiao builds Tuya Wi-Fi cameras in Shenzhen on 172 existing platforms across 16 categories. We ship on the standard Tuya platform for most programmes, and we support private product IDs for buyers who have the volume and a support team to justify it. Both routes are real, and they suit different stages of a brand.

The product ID is the part buyers underestimate

A Tuya product ID is not the PCBA and it is not a firmware flag. It is the cloud entry that gives a device its identity: the app panel your customer sees, the firmware identity the device reports, and the listing in the platform catalogue. It is licensed per unit through authorisation codes, which is why the threshold sits an order of magnitude above a simple logo order.

The practical consequence: a buyer at 500 pieces can have their colour, their logo, their packaging and their manual, and the camera will still show up in the shared app catalogue under the platform identity. That is usually the right answer for a first order. The own-product-ID route makes sense once there is volume, a support function, and a reason to control the app experience — typically from 1,000 pieces.

App versus local recording: you can have both

A common misconception is that choosing Tuya means giving up ONVIF and RTSP. It does not. A Tuya Wi-Fi camera can pair with the app for end users while simultaneously streaming to a third-party NVR over ONVIF or RTSP. That combination is what installer-led and small-business channels usually need: consumers get the app, installers get the recorder.

What the platform does decide is the remote path. Push notifications and remote viewing travel through the cloud, so an internet outage stops remote access while local recording continues. That distinction belongs on the packaging and in the manual, because "the camera stopped working" is very often "the broadband dropped".

Wi-Fi behaviour in the field

Tuya cameras run on 2.4 GHz, which is the correct choice for range and wall penetration but is also the band shared by microwaves, cordless phones and every neighbour's router. Most connectivity complaints are not firmware bugs; they are channel congestion and weak signal at the mounting point. We specify a received signal strength target rather than a distance, because a single brick wall changes the answer completely.

Battery and solar Tuya cameras add a second constraint: they sleep to save power, so they wake on a trigger and there is a delay between the motion and the first frame. That delay is why a battery camera sometimes records the back of someone's head. It is inherent to event-triggered power management, not a defect, and it is the trade-off for not running a cable.

Private label scope and volumes

Standard Tuya cameras with your housing colour, logo, retail box and manual start at 500 pieces per colour. Your own product ID starts at 1,000 pieces. New enclosure tooling runs 2,000 to 3,000 pieces and takes 25 to 40 days. Sampling is 7 to 15 days on an existing platform.

Firmware QA is the part that takes calendar time rather than money. Budget for a firmware freeze before mass production and run a pilot batch of 200 to 500 units before a container commitment. For private-PID programmes, add the platform set-up to the critical path, because it is the step most first-time buyers forget to schedule.

Camera programmes usually sit alongside a video doorbell on the same app, which is the strongest argument for staying on one platform across a line CCTV and NVR models can share with recorder-based channels.

Certification

The Tuya radio module carries its own modular approvals, which helps, but they do not replace the end-product certification. The complete camera still needs CE and RoHS for Europe, UKCA for Great Britain, FCC for the United States, CCC for China and PSE for Japan. Battery models add UN38.3 transport documentation.

For North America we are direct about the limit: our documented certification support covers CE, FCC, RoHS, UKCA, CCC and PSE. Any project that requires a current UL or ETL file has to be confirmed case by case, because FCC covers the radio, not electrical safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Tuya Smart and Smart Life?

They are two app skins from the same platform. Devices pair with either, and the underlying cloud is the same. The choice is a market and branding decision rather than a technical one.

Can I use my own brand on the app?

Yes, from 1,000 pieces, through your own product ID. Below that threshold, the standard route is your logo and packaging with the platform app, which is a faster and cheaper way to start.

Does a Tuya camera work with my NVR?

Yes, over ONVIF and RTSP, while still supporting the app for end users. Confirm your recorder's ONVIF profile during sampling rather than assuming.

What happens when the internet goes down?

Local recording to microSD or NVR continues. Remote viewing and push notifications stop. This is normal platform behaviour and should be stated in the manual.

Why does my battery camera miss the start of an event?

Battery models sleep and wake on trigger, so there is a delay between motion and the first frame. Cameras with pre-roll buffering capture the seconds before the trigger; if that matters for your use case, specify it before ordering.

Is 2.4 GHz a problem?

It is the right band for range, but it is congested. Set a received signal strength target at the mounting position rather than relying on a distance figure, and survey the channel before installing multiple cameras.

How long does a private product ID take?

The hardware timeline is 7 to 15 days for samples. Add platform set-up and firmware QA, which are measured in weeks, and schedule them alongside tooling rather than after it.
