A curtain motor is a tubular or track-mounted motor that opens and closes curtains automatically by app, schedule, voice or a light sensor. Xingliao, a Shenzhen manufacturer founded in 2014 with 110 staff, builds curtain motors and retrofit tracks for OEM buyers, with Zigbee, Wi-Fi and Matter control.

  • Fitting: retrofit track and new-build tubular options
  • Performance: quiet motor with adjustable travel limits
  • Protocols: Zigbee 3.0, Wi-Fi and Matter versions
  • Programme: from 500 pcs, tooling in 25 to 40 days

A curtain motor is judged on one thing nobody puts on the spec sheet: how much noise it makes at six in the morning. A motor that wakes the room defeats the purpose of automating the curtains. Everything else — torque, track type, app features — is secondary to that, and it is where cheap units fail first.

XingLiao builds tubular motors, track motors and roller blind motors in Shenzhen for brands, distributors and hotel programmes. Sampling on existing platforms takes 7 to 15 days.

Motor specifications we build to

Parameter Standard build Why it matters
Noise level Under 35 dB on quiet platforms Above about 40 dB it is audible in a quiet bedroom
Load capacity 6 kg to 15 kg depending on platform Heavy lined curtains need the upper end
Track types Straight track, curved track, roman rod, roller blind Curved bay windows are a different product, not an accessory
Opening style Centre-opening, one-way, or dual-motor Centre-opening is the residential default
Travel Programmable limits with electronic learning Automatic limit setting avoids manual stop adjustment
Power Mains, or rechargeable battery with solar option Battery needs no electrician, which decides the channel
Control App, voice, RF remote, and pull-to-start Pull-to-start keeps the manual behaviour people expect
Connectivity Wi-Fi, Zigbee 3.0, or Matter on selected platforms Zigbee preferred in project installs for local scenes
Duty cycle Defined cycles per day with thermal protection Hotel use cycles far more than residential use

Choose the motor from the curtain, not the other way round

The most common specification error is buying a motor by track length and then discovering the curtains are heavier than the rating. Measure the fabric weight — a lined blackout curtain in a wide bay window can easily exceed 10 kg — and add margin, because a motor running at its limit is louder, slower and fails early.

Track geometry comes next and it is not a detail. A straight track is a commodity. A curved bay window track needs a specific flexible or segmented solution, and a roman rod needs a different drive head entirely. If your catalogue covers all three, you are stocking three product families, not one with accessories.

Noise: how to specify something you cannot see

Decibel figures on a spec sheet are measured in ways that flatter the product — often at a distance, in a treated room, or without load. We publish a loaded figure measured at a stated distance, because an unloaded motor is always quieter than one pulling a heavy curtain along a track.

The second noise source is the track, not the motor. A poorly extruded track or a dry glider will rattle regardless of motor quality. We supply matched track and glider sets and specify them as a system, because mixing a good motor with a cheap track produces a noisy installation that gets blamed on the motor.

Power: battery removes the installer, mains removes the charging

Battery and solar-assisted motors can be fitted by the homeowner with no electrician, which makes them the right product for online retail. The trade-off is charging: a heavy curtain on a battery motor may need topping up every few months, and a motor that stops halfway is worse than a manual curtain.

Mains-powered motors suit new build, hotels and any installation where a power point can be provided at the window. They run indefinitely, cycle more often, and handle heavier loads. If your channel is installers or projects, mains is the correct default and battery is the exception.

Deployment patterns

  • Residential retrofit: battery motor on an existing track, sold online, installed in under an hour.
  • New build and developers: mains motors with cabling to each window, commissioned at handover.
  • Hotels: mains motors on a defined duty cycle, with a welcome scene at check-in and an eco scene at check-out.
  • Bay windows and curved tracks: the specialist case — confirm geometry before quoting.
  • Scene integration: curtains driven by a motion sensor, a schedule, or a wall switch scene.

Private label scope

Standard motors with your branding start at 500 pieces per colour. Firmware changes and custom travel logic begin around 3,000 to 5,000 pieces, with new tooling at 25 to 40 days.

Motor programmes carry more mechanical QA than sensor programmes: cycle testing under load, thermal behaviour, and noise verification against a reference. Budget for it, and expect a pilot batch before a full run.

Distributors typically pair curtain motors with RF and IR control, automation systems and scene switches.

Certification

Motors with radio modules require CE and RoHS for Europe, UKCA for Great Britain, FCC for the United States and PSE for Japan. Mains-powered versions additionally carry electrical safety requirements and, in several markets, must be installed by a qualified electrician — which affects how you can sell and document the product. Battery versions need UN38.3 transport documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quiet is it?

Under 35 dB on our quiet platforms, measured under load at a stated distance. Ask any supplier whether their figure is loaded or unloaded — an unloaded motor is always quieter.

Will it fit my existing track?

Often yes for straight tracks. Curved tracks, roman rods and roller blinds each need their own drive solution — send the track profile before ordering.

How much weight can it pull?

6 kg to 15 kg depending on platform. Weigh the actual curtain including lining and specify with margin, because a motor at its limit is louder and fails early.

Battery or mains?

Battery for retrofit and online retail where there is no electrician. Mains for hotels, new build and heavy curtains, where cycling and reliability matter more than installation convenience.

Can I still pull the curtain by hand?

Yes. Pull-to-start is supported on selected platforms — the motor takes over once it detects the pull.

What is the minimum order quantity?

500 pieces per colour on an existing platform; custom firmware or tooling from about 3,000 to 5,000 pieces, 25 to 40 days for tooling.

Does it work without internet?

Local scenes run on the hub, so scheduled and sensor-driven operation continues during an outage.

How do the limits get set?

Electronically, through a learning procedure in the app. On some platforms the motor also detects obstruction and reverses, which matters where children or pets are present.
