A smart plug is a socket adapter that turns any plugged-in appliance into a connected device, so you can switch it, schedule it and measure its power from an app. Xingliao, founded in 2014 in Shenzhen with 110 staff, makes Wi-Fi and Zigbee smart plugs for OEM programmes in EU, US, UK and universal socket standards, from 500 pcs.
A smart plug is the cheapest way into a smart home and the easiest product to get wrong. It looks simple, which is why it is usually specified too quickly: the plug that does not physically fit the destination socket, the 10 A unit sold into a market where customers plug in 2 kW heaters, or the body so wide it blocks the second socket. Every one of those is a return that arrives after the container has landed.
XingLiao manufactures smart plugs for overseas brands, importers and hospitality projects, in Wi-Fi, Zigbee and energy-monitoring variants, with 7 to 15 day sampling on existing platforms.
| Variant | Connectivity | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi plug | 2.4 GHz direct to router | Retail, e-commerce, single-unit buyers | No hub needed, but each unit is another Wi-Fi client |
| Zigbee plug | Zigbee 3.0 mesh via gateway | Whole-home installs, apartments, hotels | Needs a hub; each plug also acts as a repeater |
| Energy-monitoring plug | Wi-Fi or Zigbee with metering | Energy programmes, rentals, appliance decisions | Higher unit cost; needs calibration in production |
| Outdoor plug | Wi-Fi, IP-rated enclosure | Gardens, patios, seasonal lighting | Bulkier body and a higher price |
| USB-equipped plug | Wi-Fi or Zigbee | Bedside and desk use, charging without a brick | USB output adds heat and certification scope |
If you are building a product range rather than a one-off listing, the variant decision is really an ecosystem decision. A buyer who starts with one Zigbee plug and a hub tends to buy sensors and switches next; a buyer who starts with a Wi-Fi plug may never buy anything else from you. That is an argument for Zigbee in project channels and Wi-Fi in pure retail.
Physical fit and local approvals decide whether a plug sells, so the plug body is specified per destination rather than adapted later.
This is the single most common cause of an unsellable shipment. A plug ordered "for Europe" that arrives as a Schuko body will not sell in Switzerland, Italy or Denmark without the right variant, and no amount of marketing fixes a physical mismatch.
A 10 A plug is right for lamps, televisions and chargers. It is wrong for a 2 kW heater, a portable air conditioner, a kettle or a tumble dryer — those need 16 A, with contacts and a thermal design that survive running near the limit for hours.
The failure mode is not dramatic and that is the problem: an under-rated plug works for a few weeks, warms slightly, and then either trips or degrades. By then the reviews are written. Specify the rating against the appliances your market actually plugs in, and consider an overload cut-off threshold that trips before the plug becomes the weakest point in the installation.
Standard plugs with your logo and retail packaging start at 500 pieces per model. Firmware changes — app branding, scheduling behaviour, power-on state, custom scenes — begin around 3,000 to 5,000 pieces, and new enclosure tooling takes 25 to 40 days.
Plugs are usually developed alongside smart switches, a Zigbee gateway and a broader automation system, because a plug on its own rarely carries a brand.
A smart plug is a mains-wired product, so the approval load is heavier than its price suggests: CE and RoHS for Europe, UKCA for Great Britain, FCC for the United States, PSE for Japan, plus the electrical safety regime appropriate to the plug body — a UK plug, an EU plug and a US plug are three separate approvals, not one product with adapters. Outdoor variants add an ingress rating, and USB variants add scope to the EMC and safety testing.
Wi-Fi plugs connect straight to a 2.4 GHz router with no hub. Zigbee plugs need a gateway — which is worth it in whole-home installs, since every plug then also extends the mesh.
16 A for heaters, portable air conditioners, kettles and tumble dryers. 10 A is fine for lamps, televisions and chargers.
EU Type C/F, UK Type G with fuse, US Type A/B, Australian Type I, and Type D/M and NBR-compatible bodies for India, South Africa and Brazil.
Yes on monitoring models. If metering is the main selling point rather than a secondary feature, look at the energy monitor plug range instead.
Compact and angled bodies avoid this. It is worth checking against a real double socket in your market — it is one of the most common sources of negative reviews.
Configurable: last state, on, or off. We recommend "off" for anything heating-related.
Only IP-rated outdoor models. Standard indoor plugs are not weatherproof and should not be used outside.
500 pieces per model with logo and packaging customisation; custom firmware or tooling from about 3,000 to 5,000 pieces.
