You assess a supplier’s real capacity with four questions: how many units per month the line can actually output for your product, how much of that is already committed, what happens when you double your order, and whether the瓶颈 is assembly, testing or components. A factory that answers all four with numbers is one you can plan around; one that answers with adjectives is not.

This guide gives you the questions and the warning signs.

How to Assess a Smart Home Supplier’s Real Production Capacity

1. Ask for output, not headcount

“We have 200 workers” tells you nothing useful. Ask:

  • Monthly output for this product category – units per month on the lines that would run your product.
  • Current utilisation – what percentage of that is already committed, and to whom.
  • Lead time from order confirmation to shipment at your expected volume.

If the factory will not give utilisation, assume it is high and plan accordingly.

2. Find the actual bottleneck

Capacity is set by the slowest stage, not the fastest. Common bottlenecks in smart home manufacturing:

  • SMT line time – board assembly capacity during peak season.
  • Assembly and testing – products with cameras, batteries or wireless pairing need longer test cycles than simple devices.
  • Component lead times – wireless modules and displays can have procurement lead times of many weeks, independent of the factory’s own capacity.
  • Certification and lab slots – outside the factory’s control but part of your real timeline.

Ask which of these is the constraint for your product. A supplier who knows is one that has planned before.

3. Test the doubling question

Ask: if I double the order next quarter, where does the capacity come from — your own lines, a second shift, or subcontractors? Then ask what notice period they need.

  • Own lines and extra shifts – good; means real capacity and control.
  • Subcontractors – workable but introduces quality variance. If this is the answer, ask whether the same QC process and inspection criteria apply.

4. Match capacity to your seasonality

If you sell into a retail peak, your supplier’s Q3 is everyone’s Q3. Plan:

  • Book production slots early for peak-season shipments.
  • Avoid confirming December orders expecting February delivery — Chinese New Year stops production for three to four weeks.
  • Consider buffer stock for your fastest-moving SKU.

5. Verify with evidence

  • Live video walkthrough of the line running your product family.
  • Recent production records or a production schedule with milestones.
  • References from buyers of similar volume, ideally in your market.
  • Third-party audit for significant programmes.

Warning signs

  • Capacity answers that change every time you ask.
  • No distinction between their own lines and outsourced production.
  • Lead times quoted without reference to component procurement.
  • Reluctance to show the line, or only a showroom tour.

Capacity at Xingliao

Xingliao Technology runs 172 production-ready platforms across 16 product categories, which means most programmes start on an existing line rather than waiting for new capacity. Prototypes are delivered in 7–15 days and tooling in 25–40 days. Standard models start from 500 pcs per colour, and we quote lead times against your actual volume rather than a generic figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a factory can handle my volume?

Ask for monthly output for your product category, current utilisation, and the lead time at your quantity. Then ask what happens if you double the order. Factories with real capacity answer with numbers and a notice period; intermediaries answer with reassurance.

What limits capacity most often?

Rarely headcount. Usually it is SMT line availability during peak season, testing time for connected products, and procurement lead times for wireless modules and displays. Ask which of these applies to your product specifically.

Is subcontracting a problem?

Not automatically, but it introduces quality variance. If a supplier plans to subcontract, confirm that the same incoming inspection, in-process checks and final AQL criteria apply, and that you can inspect at the subcontractor if needed.

How far ahead should I book production?

Earlier than feels necessary for peak season. Book slots when you confirm the order, not when samples are approved. Also avoid planning delivery across Chinese New Year, which stops production for three to four weeks.

What MOQ comes with real capacity planning?

On our lines, standard models start from 500 pcs per colour, and fully custom tooling projects typically run 3,000–5,000 pcs. Prototyping takes 7–15 days and tooling 25–40 days, so capacity can be reserved once the specification is frozen.
