Shipping smart home products from China is a choice between sea freight (cheapest, slowest), air freight (fast, mid-cost) and express courier (fastest, most expensive per kilo). The method matters less than the planning: most late deliveries are caused by certification delays, Chinese New Year, and booking freight too late — not by the transit itself.

This guide covers the options, realistic transit times, and the things that actually delay orders.

Smart Home Shipping from China: Freight Options, Transit Times & Delays

The three options

Sea freight (FCL and LCL)

  • FCL (full container) – you book a whole 20ft or 40ft container. Best above roughly 15–20 cubic metres.
  • LCL (less than container) – you share container space. Good for smaller orders, but there is consolidation and deconsolidation time at both ends.
  • Transit – typically several weeks port-to-port depending on lane, plus inland delivery and customs. Plan in weeks, not days.

Air freight

  • Transit – days rather than weeks, plus handling and customs.
  • Cost – significantly higher per kilo than sea.
  • Best for – launches with a fixed date, high-value or low-volume goods, and replenishment when stock runs out.

Express courier

  • Transit – fastest door-to-door option.
  • Best for – samples, documents, and small urgent shipments. Rarely economical for bulk orders.

What the freight cost is actually based on

Carriers charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric (dimensional) weight. Smart home products are often bulky relative to their weight — a pet feeder or a boxed doorbell kit can be charged mostly on volume.

Practical implications:

  • Ask your factory for carton dimensions and the number of cartons early, then have your forwarder quote on real numbers.
  • Reducing packaging size reduces freight cost. It is worth a design conversation.
  • Quote comparisons are meaningless unless the Incoterm is the same — compare FOB to FOB, or CIF to CIF.

The five things that actually delay orders

  1. Certification – lab queues are outside anyone’s control. Start at tooling, not after samples.
  2. Chinese New Year – production and freight capacity effectively stop for three to four weeks. Orders confirmed in December usually ship in March.
  3. Peak season – freight rates and space tighten before major retail peaks. Book space early.
  4. Artwork and packaging approval – packaging printed late delays packing, even when the product is finished.
  5. Customs documentation – missing or mismatched paperwork (commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, import declarations) holds containers at destination.

Documents you need ready

  • Commercial invoice and packing list, matching the actual shipment.
  • Bill of lading or airway bill.
  • Certificate of origin, if your market requires it for duty treatment.
  • Test reports and conformity documents for the destination market.
  • Importer registration details, including WEEE or equivalent where applicable.

Planning backwards from a launch date

Work backwards rather than forwards:

  1. Fix the retail or warehouse date.
  2. Subtract customs clearance and inland delivery.
  3. Subtract transit time for the chosen method.
  4. Subtract packing and pre-shipment inspection.
  5. Subtract production time.
  6. Subtract certification and tooling.

Whatever date you land on, add buffer. Every experienced importer plans for something to slip.

How Xingliao supports shipping

Xingliao Technology prototypes in 7–15 days and completes tooling in 25–40 days, and supports CE, FCC, RoHS, UKCA, CCC and PSE certification so documentation is ready before production finishes. We can quote at your volume tiers with the Incoterm stated clearly, and provide carton dimensions early so your forwarder can price accurately. Standard models start from 500 pcs per colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does sea freight from China take?

Port-to-port transit is typically measured in weeks rather than days, and the total door-to-door time also includes inland pickup, export clearance, customs at destination and final delivery. Ask your forwarder for a door-to-door estimate for your specific lane, not a port-to-port figure.

Is air freight worth it?

For launches with a fixed date, high-value compact goods, or emergency replenishment, yes. For bulky, low-margin products the freight cost can exceed the margin, so run the numbers against sea freight before committing.

Why is my freight quoted on volume when the goods are light?

Because carriers charge on volumetric weight when it exceeds actual weight. Bulky smart home items such as feeders and boxed kits are frequently charged on volume, so reducing carton size lowers freight cost directly.

Do I need a freight forwarder?

Yes, unless you buy on DDP terms where the supplier handles delivery. A forwarder manages booking, documentation and customs, and their quote also lets you compare FOB prices properly.

What is the most common cause of a missed launch date?

In practice it is rarely the ship. It is certification running long, packaging artwork approved late, or production starting before the specification was frozen. Fix those three and schedules hold.
